Research & Development

At our three research and development centers in Korea and Germany and the U.S. we design the automotive battery systems of the future. The field of cell development and analysis is located mainly in Giheung, Korea. The field of pack development and integration into the vehicle is mainly located in Stuttgart, Germany, and in Orion/Michigan.

Giheung, Korea

Cell Development and Validation

Headquarters building.

The site in Giheung features a variety of test equipment on cell and pack level to conduct reliability and performance tests e.g. capacity tests, electrical tests, calendar life aging, abuse tests, thermal tests and mechanical shock test. R&D activities on lithium ion batteries for the automotive sector have already been started 2006 by Samsung SDI.

Stuttgart, Germany

System and Pack Development

View of the site in Stuttgart

The site in Stuttgart is featuring a sample shop for battery packs and test equipment on pack level, e.g. to conduct electrical tests, calendar life ageing and thermal tests.

Orion, USA

System Development

View of the site in Orion

The site Orion features a full array of test equipment for battery cells, including environmental test chambers to house complete hybrid battery systems, and a prototype sample shop for any battery pack and battery system design and development.
